Week Five: Homework

Reflection - any picture, any camera settings just be creative.....

Love this one, this will be handed in!

And of course, a whole different slant on reflection!

Photography: Week Five (Flash & Light Room)

Flash

Red Eye Reduction
TTL
Fill in Flash

Can be Auto or Forced

Red Eye Reduction

When set - this can reduce the red that sometimes appears in the middle of a subjects eye.  It will flash several times before the actual picture is taken.  Useful for close up portraits.  There is less chance of Red Eye however, when the flash is to the side of the camera as opposed to above (with most DSLR).

Remember: Red eye can also be removed post production using computer software.

TTL - Through The Lens

All DSLR use TTL.  The DSLR will automatically calculate how much flash light is needed between the subject and the camera.  However, this can be manually tweaked if needed.

Fill in Flash

Where you use the flash to fill in details when shooting towards brightly lit scenes (eg. person in front of window, or in  front of sun)
Need to switch on flash on - not automatic

Note: TTL Auto and Fill in Flash are much the same

Note: Increasing your ISO will increase the amount of flash light

Class Exercise:

Work through ISO settings, with flash -

ISO 100

ISO 1600

Picture Types

Two Formats - RAW or JPEG

Raw:
Not Compressed
No Settings
Able to edit everything

Advantages:
uncompressed & unprocessed
collects more data and dynamic range
can be saved again and again with lost of detail
edit exposure, wb, noise - all in post processing without any loss of details
professional finish

Disadvantage:
Massive file - on a 4GB card you would generally get around 800 jpeg files while only 160 raw files
Much longer to process
Specific software to deal with raw file

JPEG:
Advantages:
Usually better image straight from camera
less memory needed due to compression of picture
great for quick print and quick turnaround

Disadvantages:
Once processed - can lack detail compared to RAW file
Compressed image
Not able to post process extensively

NOTE: Camera can save as both or either.

Note: Light Room is a developing piece of software, while Photoshop is a multiplication piece of software.

Unexpected Lovliness....

An unexpected, nothing planned, windy day at the BH.  What better way to spend the day than a walk along the beach!  So with camera in my hand, walking boots on and my rainproof coat, off we set......

D waiting patiently for me to take some photo's for my homework assignment....

Fire damaged Beach Huts :(

Abandoned pets :(

Evidence of last nights activities....

Lunch at the Lobster Pot :)

A very faint rainbow showing us where the pot of gold is :)

And much experimental photography now the tide was out.....

Much seaweed up rooted from the rough weather

Rock pools too unclear for me to get anything floating :(

Evidence that dinosaurs still walk the earth :)

And the final bit of the journey home before the rain sets in..... this is a little car we pass each time we walk through the little alley ...... we hope one day the owner will bring it back to its former glory.

Happiness is wind through my hair and sand between my toes (well underneath the walking boots)!!

Week Four: Homework

I found this weeks homework really hard to achieve but I suppose we may have hit the point where the not so good photographer start to struggle...... and I think that may be me!

So this week I'm handing in two set as I'm not sure either achieve the goals required.....we will see what the feed back is...

f5, 68mm

f11, 90mm

f20, 90mm

f5.6, 38mm

f22, no change to len distance

And this is what it should have been...

Tooooooo many distractions when you can't do the homework.....

And I have decided after today that I will never take nuts with me again to get the squirrels to pose...... there must have been around 20,000 (OK, yes, just 20 then) squirrels and 40,000 (oh all right just 10) pigeons dived bombed me after putting a handful of nuts out....... they moved far to quick and I did actually have to run for fear the squirrels would start running up my legs for the nuts in my pockets!!!!
