Waking to wonderful sunshine this morning - we divided the day into two. Having gone through the Visitors Guide to Oxford last night we very quickly realised that we were not going to fit everything in - so picked things we wanted to do - and if we had time to fit in other stuff then it was a bonus. We also discovered that we had come on the weekend of Oxford Open Doors - where many places - not usually open to the public - open .... or those that are open - were giving behind the scene tours........more stuff we should see!
Oxford Castle - Unlocked, was our first port of call....
101 steps up ...... view from top of tower
101 steps down.....
Old prison wing....
....... dressing up as a guard or prisoner!!
Castle completed ... onto the mound ....
The idea, once we had finished the castle was to cut down behind and walk along the Oxford Canal to Folly Bridge. However, on exiting the castle, what should drive right past us and stop at the bus stop opposite but a 1957 RT. A little boy (aged about three) who happened to be crossing the road with his Dad, got very excited and shouted bus, bus - Dad grabbed little one and ran across .... I grabbed D and followed - not sure who was more excited at this stage of running across the road - D or the three year old!!!
A thirty five minute round trip .... again, I repeat not sure who was more excited D or the three year old!
Well that was a much unexpected bonus for today - especially laid on the Open Doors Event - for one day only - Perfect timing. Dropped back outside the castle, we cut round the back and found our path for the Oxford Canal. We really couldn't have asked for better weather.
Reaching Folly Bridge - The Head of the River Pub - with only a minor route amendment! Well earned refreshment...
Christchurch Meadow
And then back along the other side of the canal...
Just as I was saying to D, how wonderful it would be to see the lock in action, a boat arrived and off the lock man went pressing some button!!!
Such a wonderful day, help a lot by the beautiful weather, and the amazing Oxford Canal! Off now for a shower and another well earned evening drink!
